The Secrid brand
Secrid is a company that primarily makes minimalist wallets. Hailing from the Netherlands, the company released its first wallet out on the market in the distant 1997.
Today, they’ve grown to become one of the most recognizable European wallets brands, with more than 20 years of experience in creating pocket-sized essentials. They offer various innovative wallets, and always look for ways to redesign them in a more functional way.
In order to follow all the latest trends and always be a step ahead of the market, Secrid tries to employ as many young people as they can.
Additionally, they’ve recently become a certified B-corp as well. They put out the highest standards for both environmental practices in the manufacturing process, as well as employee care.
The Secrid Cardslide wallet consists of three parts: a Cardprotector, a Moneyband, and a slide. The parts are all proprietary, and some of them can even be bought as separate products.
The first two come as distinct Secrid items that you can order separately too. Together with the innovative slide part, they form this spacious modular wallet.
How to use the Secrid Cardslide wallet?
Although it consists of many parts, using the Cardslide is simple.
Your cards go in the Cardprotector, stuffed inside with a push of a finger. At the bottom of the wallet, there is a small thumb lever that pushes the cards out when you need to use one.
All other contents, such as personal items, notes, coins, or business cards go in the sliding compartment below the Cardprotector. The two parts are connected with the Moneyband, an elastic strap that holds the parts together.
Secrid releases a new version of this wallet almost every year, improving upon the quality of the previous series. With its all-metal build, the latest Cardslide wallet has one of the sturdiest build qualities out of all modular wallets.
The wallet uses aluminum for the Cardprotector part and stainless steel for the slide.
The Moneyband, however, is made from a mixture of stainless steel and rubber, in order to give the item both durability and elasticity for a longer time.
The Cardslide has one of the most eye-catching minimalist aesthetics found in minimalist wallets today. It has a strict, boxy design, with multiple pockets and compartments that feel like they pop out of nowhere.
Design and colors
The design of the Cardlside resembles a lot of the slide mobile phones that were popular in the early 2000s. Both parts slide off each other in a similar way as these old phones did, giving you the same feeling as opening them up to make a call.
The wallet comes in 6 different colors:
Fit to clothing style
All of these colors offer a large palette of options to choose from. This allows you to buy a wallet that will go well with your style no matter what types of clothes you wear.
If you often dress in colorful and trendy clothes, then the blue or electrolime design would suit you best.
On the other hand, if you want to keep a professional look, you should take a look at the black, green, or especially the constructure design. These have slightly darker shades but go great with formal business outfits.
There are many parts forming this wallet, so the Cardslide is equipped with tons of practical features.
The Cardlside offers strong RFID blocking to all the cards stored inside each of the compartments.
However, in order to get the best possible protection, I would recommend keeping your most important credit cards in the Cardprotector as this is the part specifically designed to hold them.
The most innovative part of the Cardslide is the slider. This part looks just like a small tray, that when covered with the Cardprotector forms a small enclosed compartment where you can store cash notes, other smaller items, and even coins.
You could even store additional credit cards here if you need more space for them, or simply don’t need to carry any cash bills.
This is the key part of the whole wallet. The Moneyband is an elastic strap made from steel and rubber and is the only part that holds the Cardprotector and the slide tied together.
It is strapped around the wallet and is kept in place with a small hole found on the rear side. Apart from being a connector between the parts, you could use the strap to attach any cash notes or similar paper items on it if you need more space than the two pockets inside.
The band is designed in such a way to allow for maximum elasticity, while still keeping its form intact and making it hard to tear apart. It is honestly one of the sturdiest bands I have seen so far in any minimalist wallet.
How many cards can the Secrid Cardslide wallet hold?
You can store 4 to 6 cards in the Cardprotector part of the wallet, depending on whether they’re embossed or flat cards.
Additionally, you can store 2 or 3 more in the slide pocket as well if you don’t need it for other items. Realistically, you can even fit 5 cards in the slider, but going above two will make the wallet hard to use, and the cards could easily fall out as well.
How much cash can the Secrid Cardslide wallet hold?
The slide can hold around 3 cash bills from any currency.
The bills will have to be folded at least twice in order to fit inside the tray, but will also leave a little space for a couple of coins in there too.
Weight, size, dimensions
Since it’s completely made from metal, the wallet will have some weight to it. It weighs approximately 3.45 oz / 98 gr when it’s empty, which is still on par with most of the high-end metal wallets on the market.
However, the size of the wallet is still among the smallest ones when compared to other similar ones. This is especially true for its depth which is hardly expandable and will stay roughly the same all the time, and because of that, this is one of the best slim wallets available right now.
Its precise dimensions are:
- height: 2.7 in / 6.8 cm
- width: 4 in / 10.3 cm
- depth: 0.75 in / 1.9 cm
In general, the Cardslide has very positive feedback from its customers. The wallet has gathered a high 4.4/5 stars rating on Amazon and an even better 4.8/5 stars rating on Mukama.
The main thing users love is the storage this wallet provides while still maintaining its slim figure. It’ll never become thicker than an inch, but it will offer space for all your ID and credit cards, and for some cash as well.
But more importantly, the Cardslide shines the most with its build quality. It is completely made from metal and offers strong protection from falls, knocks, and wireless theft to your cards.
Known issues and problems
Even though it is a great wallet, the Secrid Cardslide is not without issues, and there are a few things you should know before buying it.
The most notable issue here is that its two main parts, the Cardprotector and the slide, aren’t connected to each other with any rail or locking mechanism. The only thing that connects the two is the Moneyband, and because of this, the parts can often detach from each other.
The second concern is with the capacity of the slider. The tray pocket inside of it has very strict depth and cannot be overstuffed. Putting anything more than 3 cash bills, or some bigger items, will widen the pocket too much and detach the slide from the other part. If that happens, the whole wallet will become too loose, unsafe, and some of the contents can even fall out of it.
And finally, another minor issue some users have reported is that the wallet only fits standard European business cards, but not the American ones which are usually slightly bigger. The issue here is that the Cardsldie was tested for the European market, and the slide tray was made 0.015 in / 0.4 mm smaller than a standard American business card.
Secrid Cardslide vs Dango A10 Adapt
One of the wallets that look the most like the Secrid Cardslide is the Dango’s A10 Adapt.
Both wallets are similarly priced, the Dango A10 Adapt costing around $80. Also, both are modular sliding wallets, made from two parts that attach to one another.
However, the main difference here is that the A10 Adapt uses a much safer rail mechanism to attach the two parts, unlike the Secrid which relies on its elastic band. Additionally, Dango uses leather for its adapter part, unlike Secrid, where the slider is from steel.
The Cardslide wallet still has a lot of upsides, such as its storage for cash bills and the multifunctional elastic band, which the A10 Adapt lacks.
Modular minimalist wallets are one of the best inventions in the minimalist wallets market, and if you like such designs then I suggest you take your pick between one of these two, as they are probably the best options you can find right now.
Who should not buy the Secrid Cardslide wallet?
First and foremost, this is not an ideal wallet for people who need to carry lots of cards with them daily. It holds only 4 to 6 inside, which amounts to one ID card, and a few credit cards. If you have anything more than that, then I suggest you look at some of the more spacious models, and see my guide on the best wallets for many cards.
Next are people who aren’t fond of modular, adaptable wallets and like to keep things simple. Wallets like the Cardlside, with multiple parts, pockets, and lots of customizing options might be too big of a headache for them.
Compared to other similar wallets, the Cardslide is a bit heavier, especially when it’s full. This might be an inconvenience to people who keep their wallets in their pockets at all times.
And finally, this isn’t exactly a budget-friendly wallet. It comes at a somewhat higher price, and if you are looking for something cheaper, then this is probably not the wallet for you, and I recommend you check out my guides on the best wallets under $50 and the best wallets under $30.
Who should buy the Secrid Cardslide wallet?
The first type of people that comes to mind as the perfect owner of the Secrid Cardslide are people who always dress in elegant, formal, or modern fashionable clothes. The black and monochrome designs are a match made in heaven for such outfits.
Another great owner of this wallet is a person who shops with cash and often ends up with coin change in their pockets. This is one of the few minimalist wallets that has storage for coins, so it’s a big advantage for you if you can’t let go of your cash notes that easily.
If you love to customize your items and always freshen their looks then this is the best option for you. Aside from the great quality, Secrid also offers a wide range of options to personalize the Cardslide’s parts and buy spare ones in many different colors.
And finally, you should buy the Cardslide if you simply want a strong, durable, high-quality wallet that will keep your cards safe at all times. Today, all-metal wallets rarely have the build quality that the Secrid Cardslide has managed to pull off, and that’s probably its biggest advantage.
