Bellroy Flip Case Wallet Review – The Best Enclosed Dual-Sided Wallet

The Bellroy Flip Case wallet is one of the most popular leather wallets from the Bellroy accessory brand, and one of the most popular leather wallets in general. In this review, we will see why that is the case.

Should you buy the Bellroy Flip Case wallet?

If you are looking for a thin, light, and enclosed wallet then you may have stumbled upon one of the best ones of that type.

The Bellroy Flip Case is a reliable wallet with a premium leather design that holds all your cards safely stored inside its two fully closed pockets.

It’s a great choice for anyone who wants to switch from their old, bulky wallet to a smaller and slimmer one, while still being certain of the safety of their possessions, and is arguably one of the best minimalist wallets for men available today.

Buying

The Flip Case wallet can be bought either from the official Bellroy online store or from Amazon.

It doesn’t really matter where you order it from, as there won’t be much difference between the two stores. Both sites offer roughly the same prices for the wallet and for shipping expenses.

Price

The Bellroy Flip Case wallet usually costs from $69 to $89, based on which color option you choose for it.

It comes in 5 different colors, where the blue and the green variation will typically be the cheapest ones, with the other three being more expensive.

Shipping details

Ordering either from Bellroy directly or from Amazon should come with free shipping in the USA.

Shipping internationally, however, will probably cost you an additional $6 to $10, depending on where you want the product delivered. Both sites also offer an expedited shipping option which usually costs around $8 extra.

See Bellroy’s shipping information page to see all the details.

Customer support

The one big upside of ordering directly from Bellroy’s website is their customer support.

Whenever you want to contact their team, either for some more information on the wallet or if you have any concerns about your order, you can do so at the Bellroy contact page or the [email protected] e-mail address. They offer a 24-hour customer support service, 7 days a week.

You could also contact them via a message on either of their social media profiles on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram

Warranty and return policies

The Bellroy Flip Case wallet comes with a 3-year warranty period, which covers any defects excluding those done by misuse or neglect.

This might seem like a weak assurance, especially compared to most of the other wallets that come with a lifetime warranty. However, this is largely due to the magnetic mechanism the Flip Case has, for which Bellroy can in no way guarantee a lifetime usage.

You also have the option to return the product in the first 30 days after purchase for a full refund if you aren’t satisfied with it. For both warranty and return claims, you can simply e-mail the Bellroy team and they’ll get right back at you with information on how to proceed.

Bellroy brand

Bellroy is an Australian-based accessories brand that was founded in 2010. Their main focus is on designing clever minimalist gadgets that will help the user stay mobile and fully packed without sacrificing too much space and comfort.

They offer great customer support and are certified as a B Corp by demonstrating high social and environmental performance in their manufacturing process and employee care.

Currently, Bellroy offers wallets, bags, and various tech and travel accessories for both men and women. Their assortment is huge, and all products are made from high-quality materials, coming with a very pleasing design.

Basics

The Flip Case is an enclosed, dual-sided wallet, designed as a plastic-leather case with two separate pockets on each side.

How to use the Bellroy Flip Case wallet?

This wallet uses a unique and quite useful magnetic mechanism to keep the trapdoors covering the pockets closed.

Both covers have a magnet on top of them which keeps them encased, but still easy to open. You store your cards and cash bills in either of the two compartments and just open the magnetic covers with a push of a thumb.

It’s a fairly simple design. There are no exterior attachments or features, just two pockets with quick and easy access to them.

Build quality

Bellroy is praised for their high-quality designs in all of the products, as well as for using the finest materials in their manufacturing process.

Materials

The company has used several different materials for the Flip Case wallet. They’ve used durable polymer for its shell case and eco-tanned leather for the interior and the pockets.

This is a refreshing approach that contrasts most of the latest wallet trends, where these items are made from aluminum, steel, or similar metal materials. The use of polymer for the outer walls is quite a rare occasion, but still offers the same level of quality as most premium-priced wallets.

However, the most outstanding feature here is the eco-tanned leather, a fabric made from plant-based material. Bellroy often uses such kinds of environmentally friendly practices in their products, and the materials are sustainable.

Aesthetics

The Bellroy Flip Case wallet has some of the most eye-soothing aesthetics out of all the minimalist wallets on the market.

Design

The Flip Case wallet comes in a simple, enclosed shell design and is available in 5 colors:

  • black
  • basalt
  • cobalt
  • racing green
  • toffee

The colors come in smooth, pastel tones, giving the wallet’s exterior a pleasant and natural feeling.

On the inside, you have the main pocket, which is divided into two compartments. This division helps you better organize your cards and cash and use the storage inside. Right next to it is the secondary pocket, which only has one compartment and a slightly smaller capacity.

On the outside, you’ll find the Bellroy logo and a straight, diagonal line cutting across the outer walls. This line is the point at which the trapdoors open and adds a nice aesthetical detail to the design of the Flip Case.

Fit to clothing style

The Bellroy Flip Case wallet will be a match made in heaven with every business casual outfit you can think of wearing. This will be especially true when it comes to colorful shirts, jeans, and similar contemporary fashion items, as this wallet is a perfect accessory for all of them.

The different color variations give the wallet a lot of range, and that’s why it can fit different styles easily. The black option goes great with more serious clothes like dark shirts, suits, and any professional attire. The blue and basalt wallet will best match colorful dresses and sporty outfits, while the green and toffee colors are great for leather clothes and people who love to dress in more vintage outfits.

Features

Here’s a close look at the features of the Bellroy Flip Case minimalist wallet.

Weight, size, dimensions

Designed in a strict minimalist fashion, the wallet’s dimensions are:

  • height: 2.75 in / 7 cm
  • width: 4.1 in / 10.5 cm
  • depth: 0.4 in / 1 cm

It’s quite small, barely bigger than a credit card. It is also one of the thinnest wallets with enclosed designs, with a depth of less than half an inch.

Additionally, the wallet weighs just over 2.1 oz / 59 g when filled with cards to its maximum capacity.

RFID blocking

The Flip Case wallet has strong RFID features, keeping all of the cards inside safe from wireless theft. Since it is fully enclosed, it is probably one of the best RFID-blocking wallets available right now.

Considering the case build which keeps all pockets fully enclosed, you can rest assured that no card will be scanned while inside the wallet.

Magnetic trapdoors

The most unique feature of this product is the magnetic trapdoors that keep the wallet closed.

Placed on top of the case, there are two small doors, each covering one of the two pockets. They use small magnets, attached to the edge, to stay stuck together and closed until you push one of them aside.

It’s rare that we see such designs on minimalist wallets. Most companies usually go with the fully open design, and not a lot of them decide to try something similar to this. However, this offers a lot of benefits, especially when it comes to keeping your cards secure.

How many cards can the Bellroy Flip Case wallet hold?

The Flip Case can hold up to 8 cards in its two pockets.

I wouldn’t recommend going above this limit. You might be able to fit in one or two more if you stick them in real tight, but this will only damage the leather or even tear the wallet up completely.

How much cash can the Bellroy Flip Case wallet hold?

You can use one of the compartments in the main pocket for cash bills instead of cards.

This small pocket will fit in around 5 cash bills, but note that it will shorten the space for cards, as you’ll place the bills in a place which should fit 2 credit cards.

Is the Bellroy Flip Case water-resistant?

The Flip Case, although fully enclosed, is not really a water-resistant wallet.

It mainly uses leather for its design, which will be easily damaged even by a small amount of water intake. The polymer exterior, on the other hand, is durable but not exactly waterproof and will let water through if the wallet drops in a pool of water.

Is the Bellroy Flip Case TSA compliant?

The Bellroy Flip Case is TSA compliant, it is perfectly safe for air travel, and will pass the airport security gate without any trouble.

Reviews and customer satisfaction

The Bellroy Flip Case is one of the most popular wallets from the brand. The wallet has also gathered a nice 3.9/5 stars on Amazon, where most of the users have given it a 5-star rating.

Overall, users are most satisfied with its slim design, smooth, premium looks, and the quick access it provides to your cards.

Known issues and problems

In general, Bellroy has a reputation for making high-quality products, with little to no problems in their designs. However, some users have reported that this is not the case with the Flip Case wallet.

The first thing you’ll notice is how hard can the trapdoors be when you try to open them. The magnets are quite strong and you will often struggle to open them with one hand. Even if you try and use both hands, you’ll still struggle as the indicator that helps to pry the case open is very small.

It seems like the biggest thing Bellroy has missed here is putting an extra indicator or some sort of helping tool which will ease the opening process for people with wider fingers.

Aside from its functionality, many users have reported that the capacity of the wallet is a bit lower than what’s advertised. There are reports of people fitting a maximum of 3 cards in each pocket, which is 2 cards less than what’s advertised on Bellroy’s website.

And finally, one big concern people have had is how tight and unelastic the Flip Case is, even though this is largely an issue of personal preference. Some people even like this feature, as it keeps your cards safe from bending or breaking.

At the end of the day, these may not be some groundbreaking issues and won’t even affect a lot of the potential buyers. However, they still make the product differ a bit from what it’s advertised to be.

How does the Bellroy Flip Case compare to other minimalist wallets?

When it comes to average-priced minimalist wallets, there are a plethora of options available at your disposal. Making the right choice can sometimes be hard, so let’s see how the Flip Case compares to some of its closest competitors, so that you can have an easier time deciding which one suits you best.

Bellroy Flip Case vs Flipcase 4

diagonal view of the Flipside 4

One of the most popular wallets that feature a closed case build is the Flipside 4.

At first glance, the two wallets might look quite similar to you. However, there are a lot of differences between them that might be significant for some users.

The Flipside 4 is a much cheaper item and will typically cost $45. This is almost half the price of the most expensive Flip Case model. It also holds more cards, around 12, and has a button for opening the case instead of magnetic trapdoors.

However, the big sacrifices you’ll have to make here are style and quality.

The Flipside 4 looks much worse and has a pretty bland design when compared to the stylish colors of the Bellroy wallet. It also feels rather cheap, just like you would expect from a budget-priced wallet. It’s up to you whether these sacrifices are worth saving the extra dollars. If you believe that to be the case, check out my complete Flipside 4 review.

Bellroy Flip Case vs Nomad Card Wallet

Probably the biggest competitor of all to the Flip Case is the Nomad Card Wallet.

This is a single-pocket leather wallet that contrasts the Flip Case in almost every way. It’s made solely from leather, doesn’t use any hard shell casing, and is essentially a single pocket with three small exterior slots.

Aside from their design, the two wallets have a lot of similarities. Both are priced at around $69, hold a similar amount of cards, have the same dimensions, and are intended to be used in the same way.

The choice here is which design do you prefer. If you like to keep your cards enclosed, then you should go with the Flip Case. But if you prefer the old-school wallets with an open pocket, then the Nomad Card Wallet might be worth taking a look at.

Who should not buy the Bellroy Flip Case wallet?

With its unique shape and strict design, the Bellroy Flip Case will not be suitable for a few types of people.

If you need to carry around more than 6 cards, then this wallet will not be enough for your needs, and I recommend seeing my guide on the best wallets for many cards.

On a related note, if you still prefer to pay with cash and like to carry around more than a couple of them, then I suggest you take a look at some of the more spacious wallets with space reserved for notes. Minimalist wallets with pins, straps, or money clips are your best options for carrying large amounts of bills. Enclosed wallet – less so.

Another important thing to note here is how frustrating it can be to open the wallet, especially the first few weeks after you buy it. If you are the type of person who doesn’t like such small inconveniences when you’re in a hurry on the register, then I think the Flip Case might not suit you well.

If you are looking for something much simpler and cheaper, I don’t think the Bellroy Flip Case will fit your needs. You can check out my guides on the best wallets under $50 and the best wallets under $30 if you want to save some money.

Who should buy the Bellroy Flip Case wallet?

The Bellroy Flip Case is one of the most stylish enclosed wallets ever designed. It will be the perfect next accessory item for a lot of wardrobes.

It’s great for people who carry just a few cards and some cash bills and want to jump to a slimmer wallet than the one they already have. The Flip Case is as slim as a wallet can get, while still packing your most important cards inside.

If you are on the market for an enclosed wallet, then this is probably the one you should strongly consider. It’s arguably the best-looking one with a shell case design that holds all the cards covered from all sides.

And finally, this is one of the best choices for people who prefer small wallets that won’t be a big burden in your pockets. The Flip Case is small, thin, light, and reliable, and you can comfortably carry it in your front and back pocket without it causing any trouble.
